Description
Great Northern Railway originally ran through Leavenworth and Tumwater Canyon. Deep snow and avalanches in Tumwater Canyon frequently blocked trains in winter, so three tunnels helped connect the tracks to Chumstick Canyon, bypassing Tumwater Canyon and Leavenworth. Winton Tunnel was the farthest west of the tunnels. GN became BNSF. July, 2022.
