Description
Tumwater Dam, on US Route 2, is a few miles west of Leavenworth. Completed in 1909, the Dam was built by the Great Northern Railway to provide power for electric locomotives moving through the Cascade Tunnel under Stevens Pass. When it was built, it was the largest hydroelectric project west of Niagra Falls. Power generating facilities were removed in the 1950s, and the Dam now provides recreation and a fish ladder for salmon.
