Description
The rear retaining wall of Emplacement 1 bears its namesake, John Grattan, a Brevet 2d Lt who was killed in the Grattan Massacre near Fort Laramie in 1854. On a mission to recover stolen goods, Grattan confronted and his company of 30 men confronted a band of Sioux. Grattan ordered his men to fire the howitzer their howitzer, the Sioux all fell to the ground, and, unscathed by the big gun, attacked and slaughtered the soldiers. Battery Grattan is at Fort Flagler, overlooking Admiralty Inlet. Fort Flagler was part of the Triangle of Fire Coast Artillery emplacements that protected the entrance to Puget Sound. April, 2021.
