Description
A bridge abutment (left of center) stands between a pedestrian overlook platform and the Chilliwack River near Vedder Crossing in Chilliwack. The abutment is a few meters south of the modern steel arched Vedder Crossing Bridge, which was completed in 2017. Six bridges have been built at or next to this abutment: 1891, 1895, 1903, 1918, 1931, and 1947. Most of the early bridges were wood truss and the bridge started in 1947 and completed in 1948 was steel. Wooden bridges rotted or were destroyed by floods. The 1947/1948 steel bridge was too low for logging trucks. This information is provided by the Chilliwack Museum and Archives on displays on the platform above the abutment. February, 2020.
