The Okanagan Valley, a sunny, fertile region of fruit orchards and grape vineyards, extends 200 km north from the Canada-US border in southern British Columbia. Once the home of the Okanagan indigenous people, the region includes several lakes - Osoyoos, Vaseaux, Skaha, Okanagan, and other small lakes. The region is known as the BC Wine Country. A number of towns and cities are scattered along the length of the Okanagan - Osoyoos, Okanagan Falls, Penticton, Summerland, Peachland, Kelowna, and several small communities. Once famous for its tree fruit (Peachland is named for the widespread peach orchards in the area), many of the orchards have been converted to vineyards. The hills that embrace the valley are freckled with Ponderosa pines and sagebrush. Bunchgrass is widespread. The City of Penticton is cradled between wooded slopes and rocky bluffs on the west and the vineyard blanketed Naramata Bench to the east. Okanagan Lake is to the north 135 km long and 4 to 5 km wide. To the south is Skaha Lake, about 12 km long and 2 km wide. The population of Penticton was 33,250 in 2021. A tourist destination and center for the distribution of small, privately-owned vineyards, the city is also a hub for year-round outdoor recreation.
