Blaine, Washington, snugs up against the border between Canada and the United States. Surrey, British Columbia, is on the Canada side. Blaine is the eastern shore of Semiahmoo Bay, which is bound by White Rock, BC, on the north and Semiahmoo Resort and Semiahmoo spit to the southwest. Pacific salmon were fished by the indigenous Semiahmoo for many years, then by European settlers who canned the salmon and shipped it around the world. The cannery became a resort, but a large fishing fleet still calls the Blaine marina home. The Blaine marina is also home port to a fleet of private recreational craft. I-5 ends at the border crossing, becoming BC 99 as it crosses into Surrey. Oil trains and Amtrak passenger trains travel on the BNSF tracks that run between the city and the bay. The downtown area appeals to local residents and the international travelers who pause at the border for food and drink. Outside the business blocks, the residential area of Blaine is a quiet, pleasant, friendly small town, a delightful place to visit, a comfortable place to live.
