Description
The Astoria Column stands tall on Coxcomb Hill, high above Astoria, Oregon. The Column is 125 feet tall, with a 164-step spiral staircase to the lookout platform at the top. It was built in 1926. Spiraling murals tell the story of exploration and discovery by the white man, including Robert Gray, Lewis and Clark, John Jacob Astor, and the Northwest Company. The bottom circle reads, "Before the White Man Came." Indigenous peoples are not identified by name or tribe, though it had been their lands for many years.
