Artist's Description

These fishing platforms suspended above the Columbia River are used by tribal dip net fishers at Cascade Locks, Oregon. The platforms are owned and exclusively used by the tribal members. In 1977, four tribal confederations, Yakama, Nez Perce, Warm Springs, and Umatilla, created the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission to implement indigenous fishing rights in the Columbia River Basin. Fishing rights were confirmed by an 1855 treaty and subsequent court decisions. More information about Columbia Basin tribal fishing rights can be found at https://www.critfc.org/about-us/critfcs-founding/ A warm day in early May at Cascade Locks. Thunder Island is on the left and Stevenson, Washington, is in the distance. May, 2019.
