This steel, through truss bridge carries I-5 across the Skagit River, connecting the cities of Burlington, to the left of the image, to Mt Vernon, Washington, on the far shore. On May 23, 2013, a truck with an over height load collided with the trusses above the concrete pier nearest the camera, causing the first span to collapse into the river. Three people fell into the river and were rescued by boat. The current bridge was completed in September 2013. State Trooper Sean O'Connell was killed while directing detour traffic and the bridge was named to honor him. August, 2020.
