Each year in November, State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway, is closed on both sides of the high peaks of the North Cascades due to deep snow and avalanche danger. The west side is often closed here, a few yards west of the Ross Dam trailhead, behind the camera. The road appears clear at this spot in late April, 2022, but is blocked by snow a short distance ahead. On the east side, four feet or more of snow is being shaved from the tops of the drifts by front end loaders to lower them to eight feet so the blower can get through. April, 2022.
