State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway, travels northwest from Washington Pass towards Crater Mountain, then veers west at the roots of Crater Mountain,to Ross Lake. Crater Mountain is 8,178 feet above sea level, and rises over 6,000 feet above the highway at its base. The sign is misleading - Crater Peak is near Mt Ranier, many miles south. October, 2016.
