The original rail bridge across the Snake River at this site was a swing span iron bridge completed by the Great Northern Railway in 1884. The iron trusses for that first bridge had been forged on the East Coast, shipped around Cape Horn, and barged up the Columbia. The iron bridge was replaced by a steel vertical lift span bridge in 1971 by the Burlington Northern Railway, successor to Great Northern. The steel bridge rests on the original concrete piers. August, 2017.
