A few days into autumn, a birch tree stands at Bellingham's Marine Park, leaves barely brushed with late September gold, delicate branches sway gently in the breeze. The white triangle of a small sail boat rides on the horizon of Bellingham Bay. Sturdy maple trees beyond the birch are still dark green and have not yet begun to don the red and auburn hues of October.
