Artist's Description
Battery Turman near Admiralty Head Lighthouse at Fort Casey mounted two 5 inch rifles to protect the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Admiralty Inlet, the gateway to Puget Sound. Built between 1899 and 1901, the guns were installed in 1901 and removed in 1918 after World War I. The battery was named for 2d Lt Reuben S Turman who died of wounds at Santiago, Cuba, during the Spanish-American War. Lt Turman was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry posthumously. Fort Casey was part of the Triangle of Fire Coast Artillery emplacements that protected the entrance to Puget Sound. July, 2020.
