Construction of the Chief Joseph Dam was completed in and initial hydroelectric generating units were installed by 1961. By 1979, additional turbines made the dam the third largest hydroelectric producer in the US. Named after the famous Nez Perce chief, the dam has no fish ladders and blocks salmon migration up the Columbia River. March, 2019.
