Simon Fraser passed through the area that is now the District of Hope, long the home of the St' Lo indigenous people, in 1808. Hudson's Bay Company established Fort Hope here at the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla Rivers in 1848. Ten years later, Fraser Canyon Gold Rush transformed the area. The Village of Hope was incorporated in 1929 and the area, including the town, incorporated as the District in 1992. The current population is a little less than 7,000. The Town of Hope is surrounded on the north, east, and south by mountain peaks that collect rain and snow in the fall and winter, watering the tall fir trees that blanket the steep slopes and producing frequently cloudy skies. An annual chain saw carving festival produces statues that decorate Spirit Square, the Hope Memorial Park. Several highways pass through Hope - Canada 1, BC 5A, and BC 3, which connect the Lower Mainland to areas north and east of the District.
