Late October decorates the grass along the bank of the Skagit River as it flows softly through Mt Vernon. Elm leaves freckle the ground around a basalt stone marker next to the dirt path that circles Lions Park. The stone is about four feet tall and bears no engraving, no words to signify its unknown purpose. Trees on the far shore are reflected in the river.
