Description
This sturdy steel and concrete bridge carries I-5 above the wide Skagit River, connecting Burlington, Washington, to Mt Vernon, on the far shore. On May 23, 2013, a truck with an over height load collided with the nearest trusses, causing the span between the first and second pier to collapse into the river. Three people fell into the river and were rescued by boat. The current bridge was completed in September 2013. State Trooper Sean O'Connell was killed while directing detour traffic and the bridge was named to honor him. February, 2020.
