Description
An information sign at the Newhalem visitors' parking lot describes the pre-historic importance of the Newhalem site for the Upper Skagit Tribe. Thousands of years before Seattle City Light built dams on the Skagit River, members of a sub-tribe of the Upper Skagit built a winter longhouse here at a place called "dax alib", meaning 'thread' for the threads of mountain goat wool made here for weaving.
