Description
The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 drove the Spanish rulers out of Nuevo Mexico. The Spaniards returned in 1692, but members of San Ildefonso Pueblo continued to resist Spanish rule. In 1694, San Ildefonso tribal members retreated to the top of Black Mesa, which served as a natural defensive position. Don Diego de Vargas' soldiers were met with rocks hurled by the Puebloans and were prevented from climbing the mesa. The Pueblo residents, under siege by the Spanish, held out on top of their Black Mesa fortress until starvation forced them to climb down and surrender. August, 2018.
