Jasper Gates was the first recorded settler in Mt Vernon. The statue of Jasper Gates, with his grandson John Knox, is on the corner of S 1st Street and W Gates St, the location of his 1869 claim and cabin on the southeast bank of the 'S' curve in the Skagit River. They are sculptured carrying buckets of vegetables from Jasper's farm.
