Description
Historic Lower Skagit River Log Jam. Dark clouds hang over the Skagit River as it flows freely past the Skagit Riverwalk in Mt Vernon in 2022. The Skagit turns west, to the right, in the center of this image. For most of the 19th century, and back before 1792, boat and canoe travel on this part of the Skagit river was blocked by a massive log jam, from about the camera location to just beyond the bend. The jam, bank to bank and as much as 30 feet deep, was partially cleared in 1879, enabling the settlement of Mt Vernon and the Skagit River Valley above Mt Vernon. May, 2022.
