Description
The original Gorge Dam was built in 1921 and was replaced by a higher dam in 1961. The lowest of three dams on the Skagit River constructed by Seattle City Light for the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, this dam impounds Gorge Lake. The gravel river bed below the dam is mostly dry in summer because the water from the reservoir created by Gorge Dam passes through a 30 - 33 inch penstock, or large pipe, on its way to the Gorge Powerhouse. The penstock, constructed by Seattle City Light in the 1920s, is 1,022 feel long, of which 218 feet is in a bedrock tunnel. August, 2020.
