Description
A watery marsh covers parts of the Billy Frank Jr Wildlife Refuge. Billy Frank Jr was a member of the Nisqually tribe, a leader in the Washington environmental movement, an advocate for Native American salmon fishing treaty rights, and a longtime chairman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. The National Refuge was named for him in 2015. He received the Presidential Freedom Medal, posthumously, from President Obama for his environmental work. The Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge is ten miles north of Olympia, Washington, just west of I-5. The refuge provides habitat and nesting areas for waterfowl and migratory birds. The refuge includes a protected estuary, salt and fresh water marshes, open grassland, riparian woodland and brush. September, 2016.
