Description
A footbridge to Ladder Creek Falls crosses the Skagit River to a snowy river bank next to the Gorge Power House. Heavy steel cables support the bridge, and wide steel railings and chain link fences protect river crossers. In late February, snow still borders the path and frosts of the mountains of the North Cascades under a crystal blue sky. The Power House turbines receive water from Gorge Lake through a penstock or large pipe. Owned by Seattle City Light, the hydroelectric facility in Newhalem provides electricity to western Washington. Tall green firs bristle near the river, and dead trees, the result of wildfires, climb the hillsides. February, 2019.
