Description
Newhalem was built by Seattle City Light to build and maintain three hydroelectric dams on the Skagit River, the Gorge, Diablo, and Ross Dams. Before the road that was eventually named State Route 20 was built, the Skagit Railway was the only way for workers and material to be transported to Newhalem from Rockport and farther west. Much of what is now a grassy parkland was a railyard, shown in this historic photo, where the trains loaded, unloaded, and turned around. April, 2022.
