Winthrop rests astride the Methow River in the high, eastern slope foothills of the North Cascades. The River runs southeast through the Methow River Valley, on its way to merge with the Columbia. Parts of the Methow River Valley are flat and arable, good land for growing wheat and grass for grazing. On a mostly sunny afternoon in early November, the bottomland autumn grass is golden in the sun as puffy clouds cast shadows on the hillsides.
