Description
A weathered, rotting wharf extends into the Swinomish Channel that separates the Skagit County coast, on the horizon, from Fidalgo Island. A BNSF Railway through truss, swing bridge, upper left, stands open to allow boat traffic to pass on the channel. In 1953, Foss tugs hauled the 775-ton, 368-foot, swing, draw-span from a construction yard on Seattle’s Duwamish River to this site near Anacortes, for installation on the Great Northern Railway’s branch line between Burlington and Anacortes. Twin steel and concrete bridges, upper right, built in 1981, carry SR 20 across the channel. December, 2018.
