Description
Carbon County, Utah, is coal country. These rocky crags are just northeast of the old Castle Gate Power Plant. The Denver and Rio Grande Railway steamed through this canyon beginning in 1883, driving the development of coal mining. The tracks are now owned by Union Pacific Railroad, and used by Amtrak twice a day. The Price River, bottom center, bubbles next to the tracks and below US 6. An explosion and fire at the Willow Creek mine near this site caused the mine to be closed following the deaths of two miners. August, 2018.
