Description
Spokane's Monroe Street Bridge crosses the Spokane River with giant strides on massive concrete legs. The bridge, the third in this location, is 136 feet high and 896 feet long. The first bridge was a wooden structure, built in 1889 and burned in 1890. The second bridge, finished in 1892, was constructed of steel, but was wobbly, dipped in the middle, and city engineers declared it unsafe. The sturdy, high arched concrete bridge was built in 1911. The bridge was closed in 2003 for repairs and reopened in 2005.
