Description
Native Americans along the Columbia sometimes buried their dead in cedar vaults or huts on islands such as this. The burial vault on this island has long since deteriorated, but a stone marker still commemorates the site. Rising waters from dams along the Columbia have flooded many of these burial islands. Memaloose is from a Chinook word meaning "to die." May, 2017.
