Description
Water from the Rio Chama that follows the line of dark green behind the walls, sandy soil from nearby, formed by hand and simple tools into bricks, and baked by the New Mexico sun, the church of Santa Rosa de Lima de Abiquiu was built with adobe bricks. Completed in 1734 by Spanish settlers moving north into the Rio Chama Valley, the adobe walls are melting slowly back into the soil. Six to ten feet of the walls remain standing, despite the erosion by wind and rain, cold and heat, through the seasons of almost 300 years. September, 2018.
