Description
McNary Dam and Lock is a mile upriver from the Oregon town of Umatilla. Completed in 1954 for purposes of hydroelectricity production and national security, the dam flooded the historic indigenous fishing sites at Umatilla Rapids. The lock is on the Washington side, the far side of the winter gray Columbia in this image. The dam created Lake Wallula which extends up the Columbia River 64 miles to the Hanford site and up the Snake River to the Ice Harbor Dam. March, 2022.
