Description
Old Number 6, now parked at the end of the line in Newhalem, hauled workers and cement on the Skagit River Railway from the Great Northern rail yard in Rockport 23 miles east to Newhalem to build the three dams that provide power to Seattle, Gorge, Diablo, and Ross Dams. Seattle City Light owned Number 6 and built the railway to erect the dams on the Skagit River. The railway was in service from 1919 to 1954 when State Route 20 was constructed. John Stevens, the Great Northern engineer who built tracks from Montana to the west coast, considered a rail route across the North Cascades at this point, but the grade was too steep, so he found a route farther south across the pass that was named for him - Stevens Pass.
