Artist's Description

It was common for wealthy families in New Mexico to sponsor the construction of a church or chapel to serve the needs of the community. In addition to providing a place for itinerant priests to celebrate mass, the church yard offered a sanctified burial ground, usually reserved for the family that paid for the church.
