State Route 9 crosses the North Fork of the Nooksack River on a bridge supported by green steel girders. A westering sun casts stark shadows on the girders. Behind the web of angular steel, red alders, turning gold in late October, celebrate the season along the river. Gray clouds sink to the speckled foothills of the North Cascades behind triangles of steel. October, 2019.
