On a broad, flat expanse of empty wet, tide packed sandy beach, a father and son play, dancing with their reflections on the tide flats. Pacific waves roll in from far away, beating rhythmically on the shore of Heceta Beach on a gray, foggy day in early October. Heceta is on the central Oregon Coast, a few miles north of Freeport.
