Muddy tidal flats lurk beneath the Coupeville Pier and crawl towards the foundations of shops on Front Street. In a matter of hours, the waters of Penn Cove will within a few feet of the bottom of the pier, and just below the lowest floor of the shops. Sunlight glazes the Cove in mid May.
