Description
Chief Joseph Dam is one of eleven hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River in the state of Washington. Named after the Nez Perce chief, the Dam is about 2 miles upriver from the town of Bridgeport in north central Washington, and 545 miles from the mouth of the Columbia at Astoria. The all concrete dam does not have fish ladders, and blocks salmon from swimming farther upriver. Snow still frosts the hills around the dam in early spring.
