Wenatchee River flows through steep-sided Tumwater Canyon and Bavarian-themed Leavenworth, past fruitt orchards surrounding Peshastin, Dryden, and Cashmere in the Wenatchee River Valley to a confluence with the Columbia River at Wenatchee. Between Peshastin and Dryden, a diversion dam sends part of the river to the High Line Canal. In May 1902, W T Clark was awarded a water right to divert water from the Wenatchee River. Construction of the hand-dug ditch between Dryden and Wenatchee was completed in 1903. In September 1903, a pipeline took the canal water over the Wenatchee River to Wenatchee. The High Line Canal was dug by hand and continues as a gravity-feed irrigation ditch that waters orchards on the north side of the Wenatchee River. Just above the City of Wenatchee, the canal water crosses the Wenatchee River in a pipe where it becomes the Wenatchee Ditch. That open ditch carries water down to a bridge across the Columbia River to irrigate East Wenatchee and Rock Island, a distance of 34 miles from the diversion dam.
