Tucson, Arizona, had a population of roughly 542,000 in 2019. The city is 60 miles north of the border with Mexico in the high southwest desert. To the north lies the Catalina Mountains, topped by 9,171 foot Mt Lemmon. To the east is the Rincon Mountain range, with 8,664 foot Mica Mountain at the north end of the range, and 8,482 foot Rincon Peak anchoring the south end of the small range. Tucson is 2,643 feet above sea level at Tucson International Airport. The land is hot and dry with little rain. No active rivers run through the city, but dry river beds have quickly filled and even flooded the area in flash floods in the spring. The Spanish word Tucson is from the indigenous O'odham language, Cuk Son, a reference to a basalt -covered hill known as Sentinel Peak. The city is sometimes called the Old Pueblo.
