Kittitas County, pop a little over 45,000, is in the middle of Washington state. The county stretches from Snoqualmie Pass, in the midst of high, snow-capped peaks and alpine forests, to the community of Vantage on the Columbia River, and from the North Cascades and Blewett Pass south to the hills of Manastash Ridge, dusty brown in summer, snowy white in winter. Ellensburg (Eburg), pop, almost 19,000, is the county seat. I-90 runs west to east, US 97 travels north to south. The Yakima River rises at Keechelus Lake, near Snoqualmie Pass, and flows south and east, to merge with the Columbia River.
