Isaac Ebey settled the west coast of Whidbey Island in 1850. He was the first European to settle here. In time, others joined him, building large farms. The area Ebey settled is now the Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve. The reserve, created in 1978, now encompasses private farm land, the town of Coupeville, Penn Cove, and multiple historic structures. Blockhouses from the 1850s, Fort Casey and Fort Ebey from the 1940s, and shops and homes in Coupeville that date to the early 20th century.
