East Wenatchee, pop 13,960 in 2019, spreads across the eastern shore of the Columbia River at an elbow before the Columbia turns southeast. East Wenatchee is in the center of Washington state, foothills and peaks of the North Cascades to the west, the Columbia plateau to the east, and the Columbia River valley north and south. Along the river, apple and pear orchards are abundant. The principal industry is growing, storing, and harvesting fruit, primarily apples. Across the river, Wenatchee claims to be the Apple Capital of the World, and East Wenatchee shares in that boast. The Apple Capital Loop Trail runs for almost five miles along the eastern shore of the Columbia, passing the small downtown, residences, orchards, and beautiful countryside, before crossing the Columbia to connect with the trail on the western side. Miss Veedol, a small single engine craft piloted by Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, was the first plane to cross the Pacific, and crash landed in the hills of East Wenatchee. Both pilots survived. The regional airport, named after the primary pilot, Pangborn, is at the east edge of East Wenatchee, on a bluff overlooking more orchards.
