Deception Pass is a narrow strait between Fidalgo Island, to the north, and Whidbey Island to the south, on the coast of Washington state. The pass is spanned by two high, arching steel bridges, Canoe Pass Bridge and Deception Pass Bridge, that carry State Route 20. A group of sailors led by Joseph Whidbey, part of the Vancouver Expedition, found and mapped Deception Pass on June 7, 1792. George Vancouver gave it the name "Deception" because it had misled him into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula.
