Two highway routes connect the District of Hope in the Fraser Valley to Kelowna and Penticton in the Okanagan Valley. BC 5, the Coquihalla Highway, and BC 97C, Okanagan Connector are the northern route. From Hope, BC 3 travels east for 7 km to the beginning of BC 5. BC 3 continues east, and BC 5 runs north along the Coquihalla River for 60 km, eventually crossing the Coquihalla Summit, up across the grassy ranges to Merritt. At an intersection about 2 km beyond Merritt, BC 5 continues north to Kamloops, while BC 97C begins its journey south and east, to Peachland on the shores of Okanagan Lake where BC 97C merges with BC 97 which goes north through Kelowna and south to the US border. Thick forests of fir trees line BC 5 to the Coquihalla Summit, then pines mix with the firs, bunchgrass intervenes, and sagebrush appear among the Ponderosa pines as the highway gradually sinks to the Okanagan Valley. In late spring, summer, and early autumn, these two highways, BC 5 and BC 97C are often roofed by blue skies with moderate temps. Crossing in the fall, digital signs warn travelers to "Shift Into Winter,' and other signs require trucks and commercial vehicles to carry chains from October 1 to April 30, while cars must have snow tires for those months. Late autumn, winter, and early spring bring snow, wind, and cold temps. Regardless what the weather brings, warm and sunny or cold and snowy, this route across a stretch of southern British Columbia is a beautiful journey.
