Anacortes is named for Anne Curtis Bowman (Ana - Cortes), the wife of an early settler. The city of roughly 18,000 sits on the north end of Fidalgo Island, surrounded by water on three sides. Rosario Strait is to the west, opening to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Guemes Channel is on the north side of the city, and Fidalgo Bay which opens to Padilla Bay is east of Anacortes. Once a lumber and fish canning center, Anacortes now hosts a large marina for commercial fishing boats and private recreational craft, a busy ship-building and repair facility, and ferry docks for Washington State Ferries and a Guemes Island Ferry.
