Description
Oregon Pioneer, or Gold Man, represents the pioneer spirit of the Oregon settlers and stands on a lofty perch atop the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. The statue is bronze, covered by gold leaf, and is 22 feet tall. It is hollow and weighs 7.7 tons. He is holding an ax and a tarp, preparing to build a shelter. Constructed in New Jersey, it was shipped to Salem via the Panama Canal, by rail, and by truck.
