Artist's Description
It's the Portrero Trading Post now. The Vigil family opened it in 1948. Ristras, strings of red chile pods, hang drying from the roof. The store is less than fifty yards from the Santuario in Chimayo, New Mexico. The contrast between the image of the Virgin Mary on the right and the list of products on the left is fascinating, especially since popsicles share equal billing with santos, New Mexico traditional carved images of saints. The gas pump no longer works.
