Description
Native Americans along the Columbia sometimes buried their dead in cedar huts on islands like the low spit of land in the middle of the river, left of center of the image. The burial vault on this island melted into the earth many years ago, but a stone marker still commemorates the site. Hydroelectric dams on the Columbia have flooded many of these burial islands. The view is downriver, from the Chamberlain Lake Rest Area in Washington. Hood River, Oregon, is on the left bank, around the next bend.
